Press play, because the Sony Walkman TPS-L2 has just crossed 10,000 supporters on LEGO® Ideas. Built by Headlight Bricks, this one-to-one replica recreates the 1979 gadget that first let people carry their tunes in a pocket. Around 520 pieces, a bright blue shell, and those unmistakable orange headphones. Remember when music came on a physical thing you could hold?

Here is where the build really sings. Those tiny volume buttons actually slide. The mic and eject buttons press down. You can pop cassettes in and out, and the little spindles (you know, the spinning thingy that ate your favourite tape at the worst possible moment) genuinely turn. Getting working mechanisms into a shape this compact takes real ingenuity, and the way the blue casing hides all that motion is a lovely bit of building. Two blue LEGO Sony Walkman models with cassette tape details against an orange gradient background.LEGO Sony Walkman model in blue with gray side panels and orange headphone jack against orange gradient background.LEGO Sony Walkman model in blue with "WALKMAN" text, featuring a cassette tape window and gray interior details against an…

The set comes in two flavours: Sony's original model and the later rebranded Walkman version, so you can pick your era. Want to go further? Design your own cassettes and watch them spin. Nobody is going to tell you which album art belongs on side B, which is exactly what makes a display piece worth keeping on your desk instead of in a box.LEGO Sony Walkman model with blue casing, orange play button, and green headphone jacks on orange background.LEGO Sony Walkman model with blue and gray bricks against orange gradient background, "EJECT!" text overlay.

Headlight Bricks has a charming backstory here. As a kid who could not afford a real Walkman (and whose interest exploded after watching Guardians of the Galaxy), the designer decided to simply build one from LEGO® bricks instead. Ten years later, this is the version they love most. With 10,000 supporters banked, the Sony Walkman TPS-L2 now heads into the LEGO® Ideas Review, where the LEGO® team decides whether it earns a spot on shop shelves. It would sit gorgeously beside the Game Boy and the Vintage Radio on any shelf. So which cassette are you loading first?
